Are flare fittings for ID or OD?
Select Your Fittings Both flare and compression fittings are sized according to the OD of the tubing with which they’ll be used.
What size is flare?
The most common flare fitting standards in use today are the 45° SAE flare, the 37° JIC flare, and the 37° AN flare. SAE 45° flare connections are commonly used in automotive applications as well as for refrigeration and air conditioning.
ARE AN fittings the same as flare fittings?
Technically speaking, AN fittings are manufactured to MIL-F-5509, and industrial 37-degree flare fittings are manufactured to meet SAE J514/ISO-8434-2. (Learn how to cross reference Military Specification numbers with this Air-Way tutorial.) The most notable difference between these standards are in the threads.
Is NPT flared?
NPT or IPT pipe threads are tapered, Compression Fitting Threads are Parallel. Our illustration, adapted from Industrial Specialties Mfg., shows the key difference between tapered threads cut onto standard pipe fittings (NPT or IPT) and parallel-threads cut onto flare or compression fittings (IPT).
Is SAE and flare the same?
SAE 45° flare connections are commonly used in automotive applications as well as for refrigeration and air conditioning. SAE fittings are typically made from brass. SAE and AN/JIC connections are incompatible due to the different flare angle.
Why are flare fittings 37 degrees?
37° flare fittings perform well in severe applications where vibration, high pressure, and thermal shock exist. The flare fitting sleeve insures tube alignment with the fitting body axis and minimizes mechanical strain on the tube.
Are SAE and NPT interchangeable?
The biggest difference is SAE is a straight thread, it needs additional O-ring, gasket or sealing surface to form a seal; NPT thread is a taper thread, it can form a seal using its thread pitch.
